St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus celebrates marriage
CATTARAUGUS –– St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Pastor Harland West, who recently celebrated his and his wife’s 63rd anniversary, has set Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. as a time for his congregation to “reflect on the role the church has played in the celebration of love and marriage.”
St. John’s will host a worship service in celebration of marriage. West said that those who exchanged their marriage vows at St. John’s may return to the place where their partnerships began and also invited any couples in the Cattaraugus area and surrounding communities to join in the service, even if they were married somewhere else.
A renewal of marriage vows will be incorporated into the Sept. 16 worship service, for all who wish to participate.
“I’d like to add the cumulative years of marriage represented by the attendees,” West said. “Since 2012 is significant as a church milestone, let’s see if we can add the years of marriage to equal, or even exceed, 2,012 years.”
A reception will be held in the church hall after the service. Attendees may bring photographs or other mementos of their wedding days to share.
