Takahashi threw a complete game as the Buffalo Bisons blanked Syracuse 2-0 in the second game of their doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.
In his first season of playing in the states the 40-year-old Takahashi entered Thursday’s game 0-3 in his 17 appearances, six starts, with Buffalo.
A 14-year veteran of the Japanese Central League where he went 66-87 with a 4.23 ERA with the Hiroshima Carp, Takahashi was 0-1 in 15 games with the parent club New York Mets this season.
“I’m very glad to get the first win,” Takahashi said through his interpreter Shingo Kan.
“It’s very important to get a win but even more important is my performance.”
The win not only helped the Bisons salvage a split of the doubleheader it came in record time as the one hour, 21-minute affair set the new mark for fastest seven inning game played in the Bisons modern era (since 1985). Takahashi also became the oldest Bison pitcher ever to record a complete game shutout win.
Throwing 48 of his 71 pitches for strikes Takahashi threw 18 of 24 first-pitch strikes and struck out six while yielding three hits and just two walks.
“A guy pitches like that he deserves a win and he got it today,” said Buffalo manager Ken Oberkfell.
Not an overpowering thrower Takahashi played to his strengths. He located the ball well, kept it out from the middle of the plate and aggressively went after hitters.
“It’s very important to control the ball because I can’t throw very fast,” Takahashi said. “(Command and locate) that’s my style.”
Jason Dubois (2 for 2) gave the Herd an insurance run in the fifth inning when he took Chiefs starter Horacio Ramirez (3-6) deep to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead.
Coming on the first pitch it was Dubois second home run since joining Buffalo on August 10.
Nick Evans put the Herd up 1-0 in the first inning when his RBI single scored Argenis Reyes.
The Chiefs rode a pair of solo homers from Seth Bynum and Daryle Ward to a 3-0 win in Game One.
Luis Atilano (1-0) worked six quality innings for the win while Bison starter Pat Misch (1-2) took the loss, despite throwing four very strong innings where he struck out seven and walked none.
Notes:
The Herd and Chiefs conclude their series with another doubleheader, 6:05 first-pitch, and will be the final Friday Night Bash of the season.
Game One will see Buffalo RHP Tobi Stoner (4-7, 4.58 ERA) facing Chiefs RHP Andrew Kown (4-1, 4.19 ERA). Tim McNab (5-3, 4.22 ERA) will get the start for Buffalo in the nightcap.
