He did that, and then some.
Throwing a complete game, Knight earned his first win since May 25 as the Buffalo Bisons topped Durham 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.
Recording his last win in a relief appearance this was Knight’s first win in a starting role since May 8 when he notched the second of back-to-back wins.
Sunday’s outing was a far better outcome from his June 9 start where he lasted just 4.1 innings and gave up four home runs in a 10-2 loss to Indianapolis.
“It’s always important you always want to get back on a roll. That was definitely a struggle (last start) it was one of those weird games where you almost have to laugh because everything I threw out there got hit. It’s almost seemed like they knew what was coming,” said Knight. “To go out there (today) minimize pitches throw strikes you’re just out there having fun today.”
It was also the first nine inning complete game effort from a Bisons pitcher since John Halama accomplished that feat in back-to-back outings on July 17 and 22 of 2008.
Eating up nine innings was huge for the Herd as they open a 3-game set in Syracuse with doubleheader on Monday.
“It was huge. He threw the ball real well,” said Bison manager Ken Oberkfell. “It was big considering we have the doubleheader (Monday).”
With the bullpen needed to help piece together at least one of those games Knight’s ability to go all nine on Sunday was huge-even if he didn’t realize it at the time.
“I didn’t even think of that,” Knight said with a laugh. “But yeah that’s definitely good. We’ll have a full bullpen (Monday).”
Bulls’ starter Wade Davis (6-4), rated by Baseball America as the Tampa Bay Rays No.3 prospect, was touched for five runs-two earned-on eight hits over his six innings of work. Working 1-2-3 innings in the first, third and fifth Davis’ only bad inning came in the second when the Bisons sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs.
“He showed a lot of maturity, I thought,” Knight said of Davis.
Using his breaking ball to perfection in the later innings Knight said it was the way his sinkerball found the mark early on that really established his command over Durham (38-25) batters.
“My breaking ball was good but what I was really happy about was (that) I started throwing the sinker today. I throw it here and there but I just haven’t been quite comfortable enough with it,” said Knight. “Today I made a concerned effort to just get after it be really aggressive and throw it, basically, as hard as I could and I got confident with it and I think that helped me to keep guys off balance…later in the game is when the breaking ball started coming around.”
Knight struck out seven with no walks, scattered six hits and would retire 12 consecutive batters’ over the course of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Robinson Cancel (3 for 4, two runs), Luis Rivera (2 for 4), Jesus Feliciano (2 for 4) and Chip Ambress (2 for 4) all had multiple hit games for the Herd (20-40).
