Bisons close out home stand with loss

At this stage of the game all that the Buffalo Bisons have left to play for is their pride. Too bad pride is in short supply at the downtown ballpark these days.

The Bisons went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left five on base as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Toledo Mud Hens in front of 10, 783 fans at Coca-Cola Field Sunday afternoon.

It’s a story that manager Ken Oberkfell has seen far too often and has become increasingly annoyed with.

Evan more frustrating than the loss in Oberkfell’s eyes is the fact that there was virtually no passion from the bulk of his players.

This lackluster effort, especially at home on the heels of sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday is simply not acceptable in the Skipper’s view.

“It’s frustrating. (Saturday) night we get two great pitching performances from (Jon) Niese and (Nelson) Figueroa today we couldn’t capitalize. We just can’t seem to get that streak going. It’s frustrating to be playing the way we’ve been playing at home,” said Oberkfell. “It’s frustrating for the fans and it’s frustrating for me.”

    The Skipper continued.

“What I was disappointed in more than anything today was the effort that some of these guys put out there. It’s like some of them are just going through the motions and that’s just unacceptable,” said Oberkfell. “If they don’t want to take the game seriously they don’t need to be in the game. It’s that simple. There are guys out there that bust their tails and then there’s other guys, I’m not going to mention names, there’s other guys that look like they go through the motions. It’s reported (to the Mets). I report it. It’s frustrating. We’ve still got 50 games to go and I want to finish strong. It’s unacceptable to me.”

While a case could be made that the Bisons (34-56) were victims of bad bounces end result they also had plenty of chances especially in the eighth inning when Chip Ambres and Rene Rivera opened the inning with back-to-back singles but even with the benefit of those two hits and pair of Mud Hen errors on a Jesus Feliciano hit the Bisons could only plate one run in that frame.

“I think it just comes to a point where guys, and I have to include myself, have to bear down,” said Chip Ambres, who went 3-for-4 with three runs. “This is what we do. This isn’t like it’s our first time (in pro ball) it’s not our rookie season we’ve been around for a while and we kind of know what to do. I think guys like Feliciano have carried this ball club for a while and we just need some more guys to kind of step up and contribute. All of is has to do with luck, too. A lot of us have been hitting the ball right on the screws and right at people.”

Toledo got on the board first when Bisons starter Ken Takahashi left a fastball over the plate that Jeff Larish sent over the wall. The Mud Hens (43-50) plated three runs in the third and another in the fourth.

Mud Hens starter Eddie Bonine worked eight innings strong innings as he scattered seven hits and gave up just two earned runs as he improved his record to 2-4.

Josh Rainwater came on in the ninth to post his second save.

Takahashi (0-2) lasted just three innings, as he was touched for four earned runs on six hits and one walk.
