    Bisons walk it off, again

The Buffalo Bisons may not have a lot of wins, but they do know how to end games in dramatic fashion.

The Herd, now 8-22, scored their second walkoff win in as many nights Tuesday, squeaking out a 4-3 win in 11 innings over the Gwinnett Braves. The walkoff victory, the Bisons’ third of the season, came one night after Jesus Feliciano stroked a two-run homer against the Norfolk Tides.

The hero this time around was Angel Pagan, a speedy center fielder making his Bisons debut on a rehab stint. His two-run triple capped a three-run rally after the Bisons spotted the Braves a pair of runs in the top half of the 11th and had the first two batters retired in the home half by Gwinnett closer Luis Valdez (0-1).

“I had a good seat,” quipped Bisons manager Ken Oberkfell, who was ejected in the seventh inning. “The way we came back was outstanding. It was a great finish.”

The rally began innocently enough when Robinson Cancel drew a walk. Argenis Reyes lined a single to left to move Cancel up 90 feet. Pinch-hitter Jason Cooper reached on an infield error which enabled Cancel to score. Pagan then delivered his liner to center field, which was nearly caught by a diving Gregor Blanco.

“When he dove for it, I couldn’t tell if he caught it or not,” Oberkfell explained. “I saw the ball rolling and said, ‘We’re going to win this game.’”

Tim McNab (1-0) allowed the Braves’ two 11th-inning runs but was the beneficiary of the rally.

The finish was a stark contrast to the first seven innings, in which pitching dominated.

Bisons starter Dillon Gee allowed only three hits – none until the sixth inning – and tied his season-high with seven strikeouts. He was fresh off his roughest game as a Bison, a four-inning outing in which he allowed four runs on seven hits at Lehigh Valley.

Trouble was, Gee was being matched by Tony Armas Jr., who also allowed only three hits in five innings. Armas, signed by Atlanta on April 27 after being released by the Mets at the end of spring training, was making only his second start of the season.

“It was the best I felt all year,” Gee said. “Every time you have a rough outing, you want to redeem yourself. Being able to throw offspeed pitches for strikes got me through the night.”

“They were both throwing well,” said Oberkfell, under whom Armas made 17 starts last season with New Orleans. “All you can ask for is your pitcher to keep you in the ballgame and give you an opportunity. Dillon did it for us and Armas did it for them. It became a battle of who was going to get the big hit. We had the last at-bat and pulled it out.”

    ………

Oberkfell’s ejection came after Jesus Feliciano was ruled out for interference.

Feliciano’s grounder was fielded along the first-base line by Gwinnett catcher Alvin Colina, but there was clearly contact between the two players.

The call wasn’t as costly as a running error by Robinson Cancel one out later. He made the inning’s final out when he was thrown out trying to take third on Wily Mo Pena’s pinch-hit single which had just tied the game at 1-1.

    ………

Pagan is coming back from surgery during spring training to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. Before his decisive triple, he was hitless in his first five at-bats.

He kept the game tied in the ninth inning when he fired an outstanding throw from the gap in left-center to throw out J.C. Holt at the plate. Holt was trying to score on a singly by Barbaro Canizares.

    ………

The Bisons confirmed their plan for Nick Evans, the first base / outfield prospect who has struggled mightily in his first season at Triple-A.

The 23-year old, saddled with a batting average of .093 in 75 at-bats, has gone to Florida for a spell at extended spring training.

Oberkfell would not confirm reports that Evans will then be assigned to Double-A Binghamton.

“I don’t know what’s going on from there,” the manager explained. “He needs to go there mentally more than anything, to take some pressure off. He can play in extended games and get a lot of at-bats and just relax a little bit. It’s more the mental part than the physical part. He needs to get his confidence back.”
