Bisons find home run pop, but not the win

(Buffalo)-The Buffalo Bisons had the long ball working Monday afternoon. Unfortunately it didn’t work long enough.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees got a solo home run from Shelley Duncan and 3-run blast from Justin Leone as they topped the Bisons 6-5 at Coca-Cola Field Monday afternoon.

While the win improved the Yankees to 5-0 on the season, the best start in franchise history, it took back seat to the story of the day-the unexpected pitching match-up between 27-year-old Bisons reliever Connor Robertson and his younger brother David, a 24-year-old righty reliever for the Yankees.

Rated by Baseball America as the 15th best prospect in the New York Yankees system David Robertson threw a three-inning gem as he fanned seven Bison batters while issuing one hit and one walk as he worked the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Connor, who was originally drafted by Oakland in 2004, was almost as impressive as he struck out two and gave up one hit in his 1-2/3 innings of work.

“This is something we’ve been trying to set up for some time and I was very excited about this (home) stand,” said Connor.

It also marked the first time that the Robertson brothers had ever opposed each other in baseball at any level.

“I can’t wait to call home and see what my parents have to say,” David said with a smile. “They were probably listening to the game on two different radios.”

Initially looking like it would be an offense marathon by both teams, the Yankees posted five runs on eight hits through the first five innings with the biggest hit coming from Justin Leone who stroked a 3-run shot to left field off of Bisons starter Brandon Knight to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

But the Bisons responded in kind.

Going up 1-0 in the first inning on Bobby Kielty’s first home run of the season, the Bisons tied the score at 4-all courtesy of Michel Abreu’s 3-run homer off Yankees starter Kei Igawa (1-0) in the fourth inning that scored Fernando Martinez and Kielty.

Martinez added a solo shot of his own in the fifth but the Bisons offense ran out of gas after that as David Robertson used his 3-pitch mix of fastball, curve and change-up to keep the Bisons at bay.

“He was locating. He had a good breaking ball and we just weren’t making the adjustments,” said Herd manager Ken Oberkfell.

Kevin Russo’ RBI single scored Angel Berroa with the game winning run in the sixth.

Brett Tomko worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save.

Jon Switzer (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

The series continues Tuesday with a 1:05 first-pitch. Jonathon Niese (0-1) will be on the hill for the Bisons while Jason Johnson (0-0) will get the start for the Yankees.
