I went to the Rath Building yesterday to get my NYS benefits card. I was unfortunately laid off two months ago and applied for food stamps so I can feed my family, which includes two small children. We called our case worked and were told to come to the 4th floor and our card would be waiting. It wasn't there so we had to go to another floor and wait in line for about 45 minutes to give them our name; nothing else, just our name. We were then told to go back to the 4th floor and wait to be called. Then we had to wait another two hours to get our card. While waiting, we saw one man get yelled at by a county employee because she thought the 4 in his social security number was a 9. People were being berated by workers the entire time. When we asked why this was taking so long, we were told to sit down because "when you come here, you have to wait a long time." All this because someone forgot to mail us our benefits card a month ago! If this was a private company, every one of the employees I spoke with would have been fired for providing terrible customer service and being rude to the customers. I didn't ask to be laid off and need food stamps to feed my family. Please treat those who are a little down on their luck like the human beings we are! |
