This is in responce to Don in Kenmore about the New York State Department of Transportation employees getting "guaranteed 12 hours a day for snow removal". Where did you come up with this one Don? Starting about mid November the DOT highway workers go on whats called winter shift (which may vary slightly at different locations). This is an example of how a typical winter shift works. The early shift reports to work at 4:00 am till 12:30 pm. The next shift reports at 12:30 pm till 9:00 pm.If there is a snow event the 1st shift will report 4 hrs. early and the 2nd shift would be held over 4 hrs. to provide 24 hr. coverage if required. As you can see Don there is NO "12 hour guarantee". These people work 8 hrs. a day and would only receive 4 hours overtime on any given day when necessary. I can't comment on the bridge crew because I don't have any factual information about them. Research your topic Don before making false accusations.
Plowing NYS roads Submitted by BK Posted on: 2009-12-22 I'd have to say 8 + 4 = 12hrs. The best part is many times their getting paid for 12 hours for plowing BARE ROADS and spreading salt to just use it up so next year their budget won't be reduced!
