Ladies get in shape, 'Live Fit'
Providing a fun, friendly, and non-intimidating atmosphere for women of all ages, Owner of Live Fit, Jessica Kwitek, encourages and assists women to find a healthy lifestyle that is right for them by allowing women the ability to work out their physical body, learn proper nutrition techniques, and continue good mental health.
Kwitek has been working in the women fitness industry for 13 years. In 1999, she became the owner of the Lancaster Curves facility, but it wasn’t until 2009 when she decided to branch out on her own and open Live Fit, a small personal facility allowing for more individual attention to the exerciser.
Kwitek said she wanted to continue and expand, because of the women who work out at the gym.
“I also wanted to be able to expand and touch a bigger base,” said Kwitek. “I wanted to add classes and increase my cardio machines. I wanted to make it more of an all exclusive gym for women,” which was something she couldn’t do under the Curves program.
She added classes such as Zumba, a class that combines Latin rhythms and easy dynamic moves for a calorie burning workout and is taught by certified instructors.
“Zumba is the most popular,” remarked Kwitek. “We have a really great Zumba program. It is a big dance party aerobics class.”
Other programs offered include yoga, Pilates, and Boot camp, an intense workout combining weight training, Pilate’s core moves, plyometrics, and interval training. Also, Sheila Aerobic Jazz classes, Muscle Flex, and a program called 20/20/20, which is a combination of the jazz class, muscle flex, and ab workout, are offered.
A key to keeping motivated Kwitek said is “variety.”
“Mix it up a little bit so you don’t get bored and manageably put it into your schedule,” she commented. “Don’t say to yourself ‘well, if I can’t do an hour workout I am not going.’ If you can only do 20 minutes, 20 minutes is better than nothing.”
Kwitek mentioned that other different types of classes will be added throughout the year, especially with the recent move to her new facility, which is located right next door to her former location.
The new facility, which just opened Saturday, Oct. 27, is more opened and has a new aerobics room. The gym is still equipped with a free-weight room and cardiovascular equipment. A kid’s room is also available for moms who work out and can’t find a babysitter.
Kwitek is also a dietitian with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science with a concentration in athletic training and nutrition. She offers nutrition counseling for those who need help creating a menu plan, because exercising also means eating healthy. The program is 12 weeks long and teaches the Transitions Lifestyle System.
And for those who may need some encouragement or education on exercising, Kwitek offers personal training.
The best advice Kwitek said she can give for the winter months is to maintain a workout schedule. Three times a week is heart healthy and will help to maintain someone’s current body weight, but for those who want to lose weight they will have to do more.
In her 13 years, Kwitek has touched a number of women’s lives and has grown their love for fitness, which she said has been most rewarding for her.
“This place is like family,” remarked Kwitek. “I can’t tell you how many people here are over 80 years old, people who lost over 100 pounds, and it is purely because of the comfort of coming back and being here. We know everyone’s name. I think women need a place of their own.”
