Buff Lo Dip coming to local Tops Markets

There’s no better way to enjoy a spicy Buffalo wing than with a cooling dip but wouldn’t it be great if those two sauces could combine into one? Well, now it has.

“Basically it’s a Buffalo wing arranged flavored dip but it can actually be a sauce,” said Buff Lo Dip creator Duane Boring. “It’s kind of like eating Buffalo wings and dipping it in the ranch so it has the even blend of the Buffalo sauce flavor with ranch dressing.”

An insurance agency specialist from Ohio, Duane Boring, created Buff Lo Dip in his kitchen in 2010. While at a local supermarket Boring noticed that there were a lot of bleu cheese and horseradish sauces on the shelves but no combination mixtures for dipping. This enticed his curiosity and he then went home to try and come up with a concoction of his own.

“I was so surprised that what I was making wasn’t available here and one day I started making things in my kitchen and I actually got the recipe exactly the way I wanted the first time. I’ve never had to change anything,” said Boring.

After winning the Editor’s Pick Award from the Progressive Grocer Magazine, a representative from Tops Markets contacted Boring regarding the combination dip. Now his recipe is to be featured in Tops Markets across Buffalo starting the week of Jan. 13. The chain supermarket is running a Super Bowl promotion and the Buff Lo Dip will be part of it. Boring said he expects the product, which is sold for around $4.99 a jar, to fly off the shelves.

“You can use it as a topping on different baked potatoes, tacos, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, tomato soup. I mean I have people who use it for just about everything," said Boring.

The product is sour cream based but it is cooked in such a way that it becomes a shelf stable product, which does not have to be refrigerated until after it is opened. Currently Buff Lo Dip is being sold in 160 stores in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

The business is paid for entirely with cash so Boring never suffers any debt from running it. With the help of his family, Boring’s goal is to keep expanding his Buffalo ranch dip to over 300 stores in five states within the next year and a half.

“My hopes and dreams is that this will become my full time job. We’re not at the point where I can support my family on it but I have been actually aggressively pursuing other grocery chains and right now I have several that want samples," said Boring.
