Wine World employees Daniel Snow and Dave McKenzie converse with Peregrine Wines Distributor Greg Hay near the tasting area.
AMHERST - Relieved of his duties in the Navy and struggling to find a teaching job in Western New York didn’t slow Jimmy McKenzie down while on his quest to find an income. Instead of sweating the small stuff, McKenzie saw an opportunity for growth where many didn’t.
In 1973, he and two of his friends went into business together and took a chance on a small store front at Main and Ontario Street, Niagara Falls, where they began running a liquor store.
“We thought we could have some fun with it,” said McKenzie.
The trio started a small operation that has turned out to be very successful for McKenzie 40 years later.
After moving the location of the store, Wine World, six different times across Niagara County, McKenzie has found a home for the past eight months at 3158 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst.
Although he began his business with partners, he is now the sole owner of the operations and is pleased with the direction it is heading in.
“I was next to Wegmans for quite some time, they chose not to renew my lease after 20 years,” said Mckenzie. “It actually worked out for us, because we were able to find a location that was owned by Consumer Beverages. We split the building and now, it’s a one-stop shop.”
McKenzie finds himself fortunate to have a new place. Prior to moving his operations into this location, the are was bare. He feels the store his an asset to the area and successful business is proof of that.
“Business is very good. We’re easily seen,” said McKenzie.
Most of all, McKenzie stands behind the quality of service he, and his 10 part-time and full-time employees, provide to their customers.
“People can’t get the service, the quality of service and the knowledge we can provide them from anywhere else,” said McKenzie. “We care.”
Wine World offers daily wine tastings 12:30 p.m. on, as well as, wine and spirit tastings on Fridays and Saturdays.
“I developed a passion for this right away,” said McKenzie. “Everyone on my staff has a notebook they keep, filled with information of wines they have tasted. Such as, the taste, the product, the date and their opinion of the wine. It’s not just wine tasting, it’s part of an education.”
McKenzie and his staff are highly dedication to providing quality service to their customers and ensuring they receive the product they are looking for, not the product that the store thinks they should purchase.
Stop into Wine World to see the newly expanded location and have a taste of delectable wines, while those on staff will be ready to assist with any questions one may have regarding which wine or spirit might suit their needs best.
