    Vietnam vet tells his story

Remembrance of Fred Tomasello Jr.’s past experiences during the Vietnam War stains his cheeks as he recalls that time.

Fred Tomasello Jr. is the author of Walking Wounded: Memoir of a Combat Veteran.
Tomasello was in Vietnam for a 10-month period. After getting wounded twice in which he was shot, Tomasello was assigned the task of making casualty calls for 15 months, notifying families that their loved ones would not be returning home to them.

To help deal with his posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Tomasello wrote 30 pages of the triggering events that led up to his condition. Several people encouraged him to document his experience in a novel, entitled Walking Wounded: Memoir of a Combat Veteran.

The memoir focuses on how Tomasello felt that he needed to prove to himself that he was a man and strong. At 19 years old he joined the marines because he felt it was a shortcut to manhood.
“I found out that violence is not the way to solve our problems,” said Tomasello. “It’s a lot easier to talk about the exciting parts, but I’d rather get shot three more times than have to tell families that their loved ones died.”

Tomasello wrote the memoir to not only talk about his experiences, but to warn people interested in entering the service to know what they are in for.

“It’s easy to join thinking that by joining the service you won’t have to pay for college, but there are a plethora of possibilities that can happen while you are in it,” said Tomasello. “Not only can you die and get shot and wounded, but you can be exposed to horrendous experiences that will stay with you forever.”

Even though Tomasello’s experience happened more than 30 years ago, anger still erupts at inappropriate times with his loved ones. Now though, they happen less frequently than when he initially came back from Vietnam.

Currently, both he and his wife, Kathy, volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Hospital (VA). At first they began sitting with the veterans when they passed away through the no one dies alone program.

This past June, Tomasello began a writers group with members representing WWII to the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. The group meets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month in room 422 B at the VA Hospital.

“As of now no one in the group has yet to tell me that they are getting better because of the writing, but I know it helped me,” said Tomasello. “Maxine Hong Kingston in Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace, has worked with veterans and collected their stories. Many of them experience a similar catharsis from their writing.”
