Red Ribbon Week at Springville-GI High

Last week, October 19-23, was Red Ribbon Week at Springville-Griffith Institute High School. The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club participated in this week-long celebration of safe choices by engaging the student body in numerous activities.
On Monday, the students tied red ribbons on doorknobs and locker handles to remind the students of everyone who died in an alcohol-related death.
On Wednesday, the club held a contest to see who could wear the most red, the national SADD color and offered prizes to the winners.
On Thursday, the club put carnations on students’ lockers to represent the hourly toll of drug-related deaths. Senior Krista Anderson, president of SADD, said “Red Ribbon Week is the best opportunity SADD has to spread our message.”
SADD’s most unique activity took place Tuesday, with the Grim Reaper simulation. SADD members researched the number of alcohol-related deaths that take place in one day and then broke it down to how many deaths took place during each class period. SADD member Jake Kulcyk then dressed as the Grim Reaper and “killed” a student for each of these deaths. When a student was “killed” they were given a T-shirt with the name of the person they were honoring on it and also had a black teardrop painted on their face. The chosen students were asked to be silent for the rest of the day so the rest of the students were able to see how an alcohol-related accident could effect their lives. Anderson believed that this activity got the attention of many students and said, “A lot of students were really surprised by the statistics. I really think it made an impact.” The statistics showed that three people are killed per class period.
The SADD Club started doing the Grim Reaper simulation after alumni member Lucian Hardy brought it to the attention of the Club. Hardy has graduated, but even with him gone, the Club continues to act on his idea. “Lucian encouraged us to continue this activity. We hope that we inspire the underclassmen in the same way,” said Anderson.
The goal of Red Ribbon Week is to show students how their decisions could affect themselves and others. The SADD Club was confident in saying they had met this goal. When asked what the most rewarding part of red ribbon week was, Anderson replied, “I take a distance learning class and one of my classmates from Franklinville thought the simulation was such a good idea, they’re going to do a similar activity.”
SADD’s efforts have definitely caught the attention of high school students.
