Veteran joins Springville Primary Care Center to serve with Veterans Administration
Local doctor combines military and medical careers to serve area residents

There is a special camaraderie that exists among veterans. Whether in service to our county or one another, there’s no mistaking the bond that veterans share.
Retired Army Colonel Laurence R. Plumb, M.D., is a military veteran now serving area veterans as medical director of Catholic Health’s Springville Primary Care Center. Earlier this year, VA Western New York Healthcare System opened a VA satellite clinic at the Springville center at 27 Franklin Street. That is when Dr. Plumb came to Springville.
“When I learned Catholic Health was looking for a physician at its primary care center in Springville and the VA was opening up a satellite clinic there, it seemed like a perfect fit,” Dr. Plumb said. “Even though I’m retired from active military duty, this is my way to continue to serve my country and keep in contact with local veterans.”
Board certified in Family Practice, Dr. Plumb sees area veterans daily in the growing medical practice that also caters to local residents. “I really enjoy the contact with my fellow veterans, but having been in private practice for many years, I also enjoy seeing patients from the Springville community,” Dr. Plumb added. “I expect to spend half my time serving area veterans and the other half seeing families throughout the local area.”
Besides the military ties between doctor and patient, Dr. Plumb, who was involved in a number of medical missions during his military deployment, understands the unique medical needs of those who have served in the armed forces. “Whether we know each other personally, those of us who have served in the military are like family,” Dr. Plumb added. “We have common experiences. There is even special lingo that only veterans understand.”
A member of the New York Army National Guard, Dr. Plumb retired from active duty in 2007 after 24 years of service as a U.S. Army Flight Surgeon. During his military career, he served in Desert Storm, Germany, Bosnia and Iraq. While in Iraq, he served as a battalion surgeon in a combat zone and received the combat medic badge. Most recently, he served as medical director of the 249th Air Ambulance Company and a flight surgeon for the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion for the Army National Guard.
In addition to his military service, Dr. Plumb also operated a private medial practice for nearly 30 years in his hometown of Hamburg, New York and as an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine. Prior to joining Springville Primary Care he served as director of the Family Residency Program at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He continues to hold a teaching appointment at the UB Medical School.
“Dr. Plumb is a great addition to our staff. He knows the Southern Tier well and his medical and military experience is the perfect combination for the variety of patients we see at Springville Primary Care,” said Mike Reilly, vice president of Primary Care Services for Catholic Health. “As a decorated veteran, we are proud to have him as part of our medical team.”
Springville Primary Care is one of 13 Primary Care Centers operated by Catholic Health. The Springville VA clinic offers a variety of health care services to area veterans including primary care, behavioral health, laboratory collection, nutritional counseling and social service assistance.
“Becoming a VA satellite clinic was a great opportunity for Catholic Health and Springville Primary Care to expand our services to area veterans,” Reilly continued. “It is also an honor for our health system and staff to care for those men and women who have given so much to our country through their military service.”
For Dr. Plumb, it is a way to blend his military and medical careers into a position that will allow him to serve area veterans and members of the local community with an unwavering sense of duty and honor.
