A one-on-one race for town supervisor and a four-way race for two town council seats will be on the ballot when voters head to the polls this Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The following is a brief glance at the candidates in each race.
Town Supervisor:
• Martin Ballowe — According to Boston Republican Committee Chairman Karl Simmeth Jr. and members of the Boston GOP, the selection of Ballowe and his fellow Republican candidates “is essential to restore the board to its true purpose — running the town like a business.”
Ballowe has 22 years of business leadership experience in planning, management and economics as a partner in two local businesses — Suburban Pest Control and Suburban Property Maintenance.
“As a business owner, Marty will bring his business principles of honesty, integrity, and teamwork to Boston government,” said Simmeth.
A 15-year resident of Boston, he resides on George Drive with his family.
Ballowe is confident in his abilities and thinks he is the right person to lead the town.
“Boston is a special place and I can lead our town government as a team to achieve outstanding service and management accomplishments,” said Ballowe. “I will demonstrate integrity in all things that I do and accomplish and will show by my example and actions that I will respect and value all people and all political parties. I will advance the goal of public service in all that I do.”
• Richard Hawkins — A 15-year resident of the town, Hawkins works in the maintenance department at Our Lady of Victory Hospital.
A former councilman who joined the Boston Town Board in 2002 after a special election, he was appointed town supervisor earlier this year after William Eagan resigned from that position
Hawkins, who will turn 61 in December, was named “Firefighter of the Year” in 2004 by the Patchin Fire Company. He also received the fire department’s “Outstanding Service Award” and helped other firefighters build a stage for the Boston Lions Shelter, which is used for the town’s summer concert series and other special events.
Hawkins has also umpired baseball and softball games and has served as vice president of Churchill Child Care’s board of directors. He was previously employed at Boston Valley Elementary School as a teacher’s aide.
Hawkins is confident his past experience as the town’s deputy supervisor and his time spent this year as the town’s top elected official have provided him with invaluable hands on experience.
Town Council:
Jay Boardway — A resident of Boston for 17 years, Boardway moved to Boston in 1992.
He has served as president of the Boston Chamber of Commerce for five years and also is involved with the community with his work as president of the Boston Youth Soccer League, chairman of the board of directors at the Churchill Child Center and serves on the worship team of the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg.
He served in the United States Army Reserve during a period of peacetime from 1982 through 1990, working as a combat medic with the 365th EVAC Hospital based in Niagara Falls.
Professionally, Boardway has always worked in the private sector. He is a licensed claimant’s representative and is currently employed with the firm Losi & Gangi. He concentrates his practice in the areas of workman’s compensation and social security disability.
“My running mates and I are all businessmen and want to bring that perspective to Boston Town Hall,” said Boardway, a Republican running on a slate with Martin Ballowe and Jeff Genzel. “We have pledged an immediate 20 percent pay cut in the salaries of Town Board members. I ask voters to look at my record. I would serve on the Boston Town Board for free if they would let me.”
Cathleen Dobson — Seeking her second four-year term, the Democrat works in the administrative offices of the Eden Central School District.
An internal auditor, Dobson has an associate’s degree in business administration from Erie Community College.
Dobson believes in serving as an elected official who takes pride in being professional, fair and honest when interacting with her constituents. Issues such as the new state police barracks project and drainage problems have been reviewed by Dobson, who has receiving input from local, state and federal officials on the problems related to Eighteen Mile Creek.
Dobson is also proud of the fact that the current Boston Town Board was able to put together a balanced budget that featured no increases to the general and highway funds in 2010.
Dobson and her colleagues on the board are proud of their record over the past three years, which includes lower taxes, control in the growth of expenses to less than one percent and the elimination of non-productive positions that used to exist on the town’s payroll.
Jeff Genzel — A fourth generation Bostonian, Genzel is a graduate of Orchard Park High School and Alfred State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in land surveying.
He also possesses a professional land surveyors license in New York and four other states.
After selling his first land surveying business located in Wyoming, Genzel opened his own land surveying business in 2001, an operation that is now located in the Town of Boston.
“During the past 13 years as a professional land surveyor and business owner, Jeff has acquired invaluable knowledge pertaining to land development, building standards, and municipality procedures for development which will greatly benefit the citizens of the Town of Boston” said Simmeth.
Genzel serves on the board of directors for the Niagara Frontier Land Surveyors Association and is a member of Saint John Baptist Church in Boston.
• David Ruzzine — Appointed to the board earlier this year to replace Hawkins after Eagan resigned as town supervisor, Ruzzine is a former member of the Town of Boston Planning Board.
Now seeking a full four-year term, Ruzzine serves as the Boston Town Board’s liaison for issues related to drainage, insurance, the Boston Community Foundation and the Southtowns Haz-Mat Team.
Ruzzine’s campaign is one that promotes an open government where town officials hear from the public on what they would like to see done in their community. He supports the efforts to seek grant money to make major improvements in town and run Boston Town Hall with the mindset of “good government for the people.”
Ruzzine is proud of the accomplishments achieved by the Town Board during his brief time as a councilman and said he wants to be elected to a full term so he can focus on improving the quality of life for all Boston residents.
Town Justice Debar Bender is running unopposed for another four-year term.
