    Couple go on four-year trip

The Kiwanis Club of Marilla recently hosted Ken Frey.

Frey spoke of his life-changing trip around the world with his wife, Cheryl, a year after they were married.

Ken showed a multitude of slides. The trip was at first all talk, until it was transformed into reality after he had told a 94-year-old friend their ambitions. He told them to do the trip and to not talk about it happening someday.

Both Ken and Cheryl saved their money, purchased a 39-foot boat, which they got ready for the sea, named it Hanna, and embarked on their journey July of 1991.

Their trip initiated along the Erie Canal. Their boat was pulled by a mule for a good distance of their trip.

The outbound route followed the eastern seaboard, where they encountered some bad weather, which gave them a sudden reality check for the novice voyagers. The Freys tied themselves to parts of the boat during bad weather.

At the beginning of their trip, global positioning systems (GPS) were not widely available for navigation because not enough satellites were connected to the system. They used the stars to navigate their voyage.

Toward the end of their trip, they used a GPS, which gave their actual location within 100 yards.

To acquire fresh water on the ocean, the Frey’s used reverse osmosis to convert water from salt to fresh. They showered using buckets of salt water, lemon Joy soap and rinsing with minimal amounts of fresh water.

Toward the beginning of their journey, they paid $300 to travel through the Panama Canal.

Freighters were of high concern for them throughout the trip since their vessel might not be seen by a large ship.

During the night, they would need to check the horizon every 20 minutes to watch for approaching freighters.

All of their stops would include a request from the locals to see any regional waterfalls or churches. All of the residents that they came in contact with were very welcoming to them and were fascinated by their story.

A ham radio was the main source of their communication and was very comforting to be able to call home to Alden from anywhere in the world.

Their longest stretch with no signs of life was 24 days on their way to Easter Island.

They used many languages on their trip including Spanish, French, Portugese and Indonesian.

At the equator, they followed tradition and had a celebration involving costumes and drinking a toast to their 94-year-old friend using some cognac, which he gave them.

In 1994, a son named Gabriel was born to them in New Zealand. A local medical doctor allowed Ken to help with the birth.

Because of Gabriel’s birth, they spent four months in New Zealand, traveling around by car. They also used this time to acquire new charts for the remainder of their voyage.

Four years, 40 thousand miles and 28 countries later, they were back home in Alden.

Their family now includes four children.
