Union East welcomes students back by celebrating diversity

To celebrate who Union East Elementary School’s students are, the countries and cultures of their families, where they live now and that everyone is part of the Union East family, the school held their third annual multicultural festival.

Students at Union East Elementary School make crafts in celebration of the school’s multicultural festival.
More than 330 students and their families participated in the event. Approximately 60 teachers, staff members, administrators, board of education members and retired teachers volunteered their time to make the festival possible.

“The idea for the festival came out of the work of our original 405 team, consisting of Cindy Havas, Melissa Rogers, Amy Lombardo, Dennis McCann, Karen Stadelmeyer and I, did with New York University,” said Gretchen Sukdolak, principal of Union East Elementary School. “We began to focus in on ways in which we could apply a ‘cultural lens’ to all that we do with children. The realization of the multicultural festival allowed us to begin to embrace each other in a positive, fun, as well as meaningful way.”

The goal of the festival was to welcome back all students to the commencement of classes and give them a chance to celebrate with their families and enjoy with the faculty and staff at Union East.

“This helps students form connections and relationships with the members of the school,” said Michele Setzer, ESL teacher for the Cheektowaga Central School District. “Every student needs to feel like an important member of our school family and by celebrating each one’s individuality, we hope to have them learn that even though people are different, we can all work together to accomplish great things.”

There were 10 around the world tents set up. Countries represented included Poland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Vietnam, Middle East, China, Latin America, Africa and America. Each tent had ethnic food samples, crafts and artifacts, which allowed attendees to experience what each country has to offer while learning about the culture.

Organizations throughout Cheektowaga also had tables set up at the festival, including the Cheektowaga Police Bike Patrol, D.A.R.E., Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, Cheektowaga Youth Engaged in Services and information about Union East and various clubs and activities the district had to offer, just to name a few. There were also folk dancing presentations and the Buffalo Zoomobile’s World Safari program made a stop.

Students also were given the opportunity to dunk Sukdolak and D.A.R.E. Officers Nazzarett and Patterson in the dunk tank, which was quite a popular activity.

When students arrived this year, they were given a scavenger hunt map in which they needed to obtain a stamp at each tent and Town of Cheektowaga table. When completed they were given a glow in the dark celebrate diversity bracelet. Students were also given a goodie bag and pencils containing the word ‘welcome’ on it in several languages.
