Teamwork helps troop win trophy
Boy Scout Troop No. 5, chartered at Parkside Lutheran Church, were the overall victors at the Leave No Trace Polaris District Fall Camporee recently held at Beaver Island State Park.
Senior Patrol Leader Dan Van Oss and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Benedict Wolfling led the nine scouts as they finished 14 different activities.
Members of the patrol included Joe Arrindell, Nick Czerniekewski, Doug McCausland, Sam and Scott Schieten, Ben Sterns, Oss, and Benedict and Simon Wolfling.
The activities had a unifying theme of creating minimal impact on the environment, including identifying wildlife, building fires, packing and transporting gear, fetching and purifying water, properly setting up a campsite, crossing a river and securing supplies from bears.
Each event had a maximum score of 40 points, which was evaluated on multiple criteria, including leadership, teamwork, participation, attitude and challenge skill.
Deductions were made if adult leaders coached the scouts. The boys then took part in additional events including Frisbee golf, a Leave No Trace presentation, demonstration of HAM radio operation and kite flying.
Troop 5 earned first place in the no water, river crossing, decompose and messy campsite events, second place in treasure hunt and third place in wildlife spotting.
The troop’s earnings warranted them the coveted Teddy Roosevelt Cup, a trophy they will keep for a year, after which it will be awarded to the winners of the fall 2010 camporee.
One of Simon’s favorites was the no water event in which participants had to run to the Niagara River and fill 18 gallons of water, run back to the event station and purify a batch.
Arrindell jumped into the river and had his feet wet for the rest of the events. Sterns also stepped up, carrying four gallons at once, helping the scouts earn the fastest time for the event.
Benedict functioned as the pack mule for the troop during the overpacked event in which he was loaded down with a pile of gear and ran with the others around a field against the clock.
Volunteers at several of the events commented on how well Troop 5 worked together, which was a source of pride for the adult leaders, since one of the fundamental principles of scouting is to build good citizens and cooperation among individuals is what makes civilization possible.
This is one of the things that makes all those adult volunteer hours worthwhile.
