    North Tonawanda wins competition

North Tonawanda High School recently took part in the Great Pumpkin Farm’s annual high school trebuchet competition. The school’s technology club entered the competition.

The technology class from North Tonawanda High School earned first place in the Great Pumpkin Farm’s Trebuchet Competition.
A trebuchet is a device invented during the Middle Ages to smash masonry walls or throw projectiles over them. It is cited as being more accurate than a catapult. There are several types of trebuchets including the King Arthur style, F2K and tower top.

But during the competition, pumpkins were hurled across a field at great distances. Each high school competing was allowed three tries for distance and three tries at aiming at a castle to earn points. Some of the machines built launched pumpkins as far as 500 feet.

The students are required to build their trebuchets under stringent guidelines, however, can pick the style of trebuchet they wish to use.

Since the first day of school, North Tonawanda High School had been planning and imagining their design for this years competition.

They used the same one as last years, but altered it in two major ways. They just finished a couple days before the actual competition.

“We looked at different things to make our trebuchet from last year better and how we could get it to throw faster,” said Sam Forster, a senior at North Tonawanda High School who participated for the first time in the competition. “The main improvement that we made was to the pin that holds the pumpkin. We angled it a bit less so it would launch higher and have a little more of an arch.”

The other improvement made was to the release mechanism.

The two improvements seemed to pay off significantly as North Tonawanda High School earned first place in the distance competition. Their three scores were 347 feet, 336 feet and 247 feet adding up to 930 feet. Pioneer and Hamburg earned second and third place respectively.
