Depew competed in trebuchet event for fourth year
Depew High School recently participated in the Great Pumpkin Farm’s annual high school trebuchet competition. This was their fourth year participating.
Depew High School recently participated in the Great Pumpkin Farm’s annual high school trebuchet competition.
A trebuchet is a device invented during the Middle Ages to smash masonry walls or throw projectiles over them. It is cited as being more accurate than a catapult.
But during the competition, pumpkins were hurled across a field at great distances. Each high school competing was allowed three tries for distance and three tries at aiming at a castle to earn points. Some of the machines built launched pumpkins as far as 500 feet.
Students from Depew’s engineering class and individuals interested in the project were involved in the competition.
There are several types of trebuchets. Under stringent guidelines, the students constructed their King Arthur style trebuchet based on research that the students conducted.
“This year we used a design that we began in 2006,” said Charlie Bonda, technology education teacher and competition advisor. “This years senior class redesigned it.”
Depew entered the competition as reigning champions for two years in a row.
Unfortunately, this year they did not fair so lucky and earned ninth place in the distance launch. Their distances were 175 feet, 143 feet and 141 feet.
The top three winners of this year’s competition were North Tonawanda, Pioneer and Hamburg. Grand Island earned the storming the castle award after hitting the castle target all three times.
