School forms the chain links club
Students at Edward Town Middle School (ETMS), part of the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District, recently participated in a national program entitled Rachel’s Challenge, becoming links in a chain of kindness and compassion within their own environment.
Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion, coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for a powerful school program.
While she was a student, Scott lived by principles that positively affected the lives of those around her. Those principles were based on compassion, trust and honesty.
The Rachel’s Challenge program strives to motivate students to create a positive change in the way they treat others.
“All seventh and eighth grade students attended a morning assembly that highlighted Rachel’s life and outlined four ‘challenges’ that students were encouraged to incorporate in the school community,” said John Fitzpatrick, assistant principal at Edward Town Middle School.
“The four challenges include treating others as one would want to be treated, dreaming big and believing in oneself, appreciating everyone, and practicing positive gossip. Following the assembly, students volunteered to sign a banner affirming their commitment to the four challenges.”
Students were then invited to attend an afternoon training on how to create positive school culture. More than 250 students attended the training and as a result they initiated the chain links club at the middle school.
The day’s events were capped off by a community event in the evening where parents were invited to view the program.
The chain links club has dedicated itself to doing purposeful acts of kindness and compassion within the school community.
“The club is lead by an outstanding group of teachers and counselors including Ms. Idziak, Mrs. Lombardo, Mrs. Charvella, Mrs. Dinger, Mr. Gaume, Ms. Gauriglia, Mrs. Gedeon, Ms. Janese, Ms. Johnson, My. Myers, Mrs. Mullen and Ms. Zaleski,” said Fitzpatrick. “Students have already met and they are planning projects to be completed this year. The ETMS community is anxious to see the positive chain reaction of kindness and compassion that will result from their students’ efforts.”
