Flames take down Vikings in Classic

    by Mike Pidanick, Metro Source

The Williamsville East-Grand Island girls soccer rivalry has been one of the best in all of Section VI for years. And the teams added another chapter to their histories on Saturday at Amherst High School.

After regulation time and four overtime periods left the teams scoreless, this classic came down to penalty kicks. And that's where the Flames defended their Class A Section VI championship, outscoring Grand Island 3-0.

“It feels so good,” Will-East senior Katie Griffin said. “We worked so hard, it’s such a great feeling. The game just kept going and going, it was tiring. But it’s worth it.”

Grand Island fans were happier a little later as the boys team rallied for a 2-1 win over Williamsville South in the boys Class A final. The rest was all Clarence, as the Red Devils’ boys and girls teams each scored 1-0 wins over rival Williamsville North.

But the first game of the quadruple-header was the most suspenseful of the four tremendous contests.

Griffin, Daniela Galante and Melissa Spada scored on East's first three penalty kicks. Flames goalkeeper Jenna Bailey stop one penalty kick and the other two Vikings hit the cross bar.

“This was a great game,” East coach Chris Durr said. “Big shots, big saves, both sweepers came up big in certain areas. Unfortunately it had to come down to (penalty kicks), but we'll take it and move on.”

Although the teams will share the sectional championship, East earns a spot in the Far West regionals next Satuday.

The overtimes may have been scoreless, but they were not short on action. Grand Island 's Jenna Raepple missed just wide three minutes into the first OT.

Vikings' goalkeeper Kristin Wegrzyn stole the show in the second OT, making huge saves on Griffin and Kayla Acklin in the final 30 seconds.

Bailey made big stops on Kaitlyn Holt and Brooke DeMarco on a flurry off a corner kick in the third OT.

Class A boys - Grand Island 2, Williamsville South 1

Grand Island found motivation in the most unusual way - by allowing a goal. After Williamsville South took a second-half lead on a penalty kick, the fired-up Vikings responded with two late goals to claim a sectional championship

“It kind of woke us up a bit,” Grand Island coach Peter Kuehne said. “It gave us a little bit more determination. It actually kind of settled us down a bit when we got scored on.”

It showed. Bobby Ross scored the equalizer with 18 minutes left and Eric Breier picked up the winner about 10 minutes later. Zack Schwartz had put his team ahead eight minutes into the second half.

The rest was up to standout goalkeeper Jeremy Figler, who won for the 18th time this season - a mark that includes 14 shutouts.

“You can’t even put words to that win,” Figler said. “We’ve been working for that for so long. It was looking pretty grim after that PK, but we bounced back.

“I’m not going to lie, I was nervous; you’re always nervous when you go 1-0 down in a sectional game. But that’s what we needed. That’s when we really started to play our game.”

Class AA girls final - Clarence 1, Williamsville North 0

Second-seeded Clarence used an early break and a stifling defense to knock off top-seed and arch-rival Williamsville North and repeat atop the large-school division.

Laura Scalzi scored for the Red Devils early in the first half when her crossing pass deflected in off a Spartans’ defender. And the Red Devils made it stick.

“And time you can get to the finals it’s a great honor,” coach Tim Liffiton said. “And to win it, I’m really proud of our girls.”

Brianna Cimato, Jamie Marfurt, Shannon Letina and Victoria Nappo led a strong defensive attack from there to keep the high-powered Spartans in check.

It fells great to be able to it with all these girls,” Clarence senior Nicole Lauricella said. “No one really expected us to do this. We’re a young team, it’s cool to be able to do it.”

Class AA boys – Clarence 1, Williamsville North 0

The Clarence boys took a little longer than their female classmates to get on the board, but the result was the same.

Chris Berardi scored off an assist from Derek Maier with 22:30 to go and that was enough for the defending state runner-up.

“It was a great goal,” Clarence coach Mike Silverstein said. “Derek Maier just put the ball on to Chris Berardi’s foot and Chris put it past the goal. It was a nice goal, the goalie had a decision to make to come out or not come out. He came out and my kid just placed it by him perfectly.”

The rest was up to goalkeeper Hunter Hein, a sophomore, who picked up his third shutout in the postseason.

Clarence beat North for the second time in three meetings this season. The Red Devils also got some revenge for a sectional championship game loss to Will-North in 2007.

“It was a win that came down to who wanted it more,” Silverstein said. “It’s a team we know so well, you knew it was going to come down to who made that one little mistake and who made the big play.”
