This year the Warriors will be able to hurt you in more ways than one.
Last season the Tonawanda Lady Warriors hung a lot of their offensive hopes on Karissa Dolney.
Knowing that replacing Dolney’s 20-plus points per game won’t be an easy task the Warriors still have more than enough talent from that 16-5 team to once again contend for the ECIC IV title.
“We talked about it in the beginning (of tryouts),” said coach Jay Hall. “Last year just didn’t come like that. We had to work really hard. So far they are. They’re working real hard because now they know what it takes to do well.”
Saying that at this point he doesn’t think one person can be expected to give that 20-25 PPG like Dolney did Hall said the approach this year will be scoring by committee and is asking every returning starter to up her production by five points per game.
One of the key returnees senior forward Meghan Kossow explained the value in having multiple scoring threats.
“Karissa was definitely our main scorer but I feel like last year we set her up to make those shots and she was really good at executing them,” said Kossow. “This year instead of finding that ‘one’ person we just set each other up and we’ll definitely score points through everyone instead of one specific person.”
Tonawanda will also count on senior guards Samantha Dayton and Deanna Bowers.
Both fierce competitors Bowers and Dayton compliment each other perfectly. While Bowers runs the point to perfection Dayton is an aggressive player who emerged as a defensive gem last year.
Kossow, meanwhile, is back after suffering a season-ending injury during the Warriors holiday tournament.
“She brings so much,” said Hall. “She brings leadership she’s a smart ball player she works hard.”
The other key departure was Sarah O’Brocta whose size and power will be missed under the basket.
The Warriors will now relay on Katie Meyer and Tina Partridge at center.
Bri Snyder, Cassie Nowark and Miranda Papp also return, will Megan Rounds is back after sitting out last year for medical reasons. Kila Gilcart, Courtney Galus, Cayla Galus, Becca Casal, Sarah Gilbert and Elissa Hall who are all up from junior varsity. Brittanie Clement has returned to THS for her senior year.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Tina Partridge and Katie Meyer.
Both standing at 5-foot-10 the duo gives the Warriors a nice 1-2 punch and some depth at the 5-spot.
