    Williamsville South to perform Rumors

For the first time, Williamsville South High School, located at 5950 Main St., will perform a farce, Neil Simon’s Rumors.

The cast of Rumors includes Doug Giordano, Alex Carr, Benjamin Sternberg, Alex Utz, Anna Womack, Rebecca Wall and Samantha Schlein, top row, and Kristen Lanski, Julie Grygier and Nathan Fox, sitting. Not pictured is Eddie Knibloe.
    The performance will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 and 2 p.m. Nov. 8.

“Rumors is like the game Clue, but more realistic,” said Nathan Fox, a senior who plays Lenny Ganz. “An anniversary dinner party goes wrong resulting in a potential murder and suicide case. With all of the different personalities you get to see the different sides of the story and why each person kind of comes up with what they think.”

A cast of 10 offer a performance of scandal, murder and a farce wrapped into one.

“We didn’t really work one on one with a different person like with plays in the past,” said Alex Utz, a sophomore. “It’s very much of an ensemble and you have to be right on top of your lines. It’s fast paced.”

The cast also had to develop their characters in relation to the whole cast and not just their counterparts. Each person was assigned one part, not multiple roles like in past performances. Skill and ambition plays key roles in the students’ abilities to perform their roles.

“The humor in Rumors is different, there could be an elongated part or quips here and there,” said Anna Womack, a senior. “You honestly don’t know what to expect. Once we get into character we don’t know what to expect either. We are just taking the audience along for the ride on this roller coaster that is the play.”

Not only is the cast being challenged with this production, but also the stage crew who were required to construct a sturdy and functioning second floor set.

“This is definitely the largest construction undertaking we’ve had thus far,” said Shelby Philips, a 12th grader in her fourth year in stage crew. “When adding a second floor it gets complicated.”

The second floor structure had to be solid and stable as doors would be slamming and various actors would be performing on it.

Adding the structure also completed the realistic look of the stage.

“The audience will actually feel like they are part of this show with the addition,” said Emily Morrisey, a junior in her third year of stage crew.

The entire set was built from scratch by the stage crew that is made up of students from freshmen to seniors.

Even though most students involved in the production won’t be continuing on this path, they still are honing in on skills that they can use throughout life.

Tickets are $8. For more information, call 626-8237.
