LANCASTER- This summer, Kristie Schiefer will be sharing her writing talents as a reporter/intern for the Lancaster Source. I am excited to have her on board and I hope the community joins me in welcoming her to the paper.
Kristie is a sophomore at St. Bonaventure University and she is studying both journalism and mass communication and Spanish. She works at her school’s newspaper and she is excited to gain hands on experience and build her resume and knowledge in the newspaper industry.
“What I look forward to most as a reporter for The Lancaster Source this summer is valuable professional experience in a working newsroom,” said Kristie. “I also want to experience all the diverse topics that come with writing for a newspaper and be able to conquer them with confidence.”
When I first met Kristie, I could tell she had the same go-getting attitude I had when I first started and I was really impressed by her drive and writing abilities. I saw myself in her. I saw someone who has passion and just wants a chance to learn and grow as a writer. There is nothing better than that.
There was no doubt in my mind, she was the right person for the job. I have the utmost confidences in Kristie and I know she is going to make a great addition to the paper.
She will be contributing a couple of articles per week, which I am excited about because it will add a whole other writing style to the paper.
Also, Kristie is no stranger to the Lancaster/Depew community she grew up in the surrounding area and knows what the community is like. I find that to be a very important aspect of her background.
By partaking in this internship, Kristie will cover Lancaster events, write feature stories, follow leads, formulate her own leads, and attend village and town board meetings, but most importantly experience life as a true journalist. Kristie will experience what I do on an everyday basic, and while some things will be a team effort other times Kristie will be on her own making her own strides in the community.
At first she maybe nervous, but I will admit that till this day I still get nervous myself during the start of an interview. If I interviewed you in the past I am sure you noticed. I don’t think that is something that will ever go away for me at least, and if it did I would worry because to me it still shows how much I care about the paper and how important it is to me to share someone’s story.
However, I am asking that if by chance you should be interviewed by her show her the same respect you would want someone to show you as I have learned some people don’t respond well to interns, which is confusing and upsetting at the same time.
Overall, my goal is to lead Kristie in the right direction, teach her what I have gained over the years, have her report the news in a fair and correct matter, and hopefully when she graduates from school she becomes a successful reporter. And I can hopefully say I had a hand in her success. Yeah, I said it.
If you would like to contact Kristie and welcome her to the paper or provide her with a story lead call, The Metro Group at 668-5224, ext. 8147.
