Editorial: What you have to say about it
Saturday April 28, 2012 | By:Jessie Owen, Journal editor |
The letters to the editor we print every week allow you, our readers, to give input on the events going on in the community, the articles we write and the topics that are important to you. Anyone who subscribes to our paper can read those and gain insight into their fellow readers’ thoughts.
In addition, our website, www.springvillejournal.com, is also available for posting comments on by anyone willing to create a username and password. But those remarks are read only by those who visit the site and peruse the stories which have comments attached to them. Many of the online observations are humorous, pithy or insightful. Some are quirky and some are over the top, but regardless, we don’t want to keep them to just ourselves. So, without further ado, below is a sampling of our website’s comment submissions:
- April 12 article, “Springville resident and business owner releases new motorcycle technology textbook:” “Ed, your achievements are truly inspiring! That yours and my paths crossed as many times throughout our careers and as that old adage goes, “Who’d a thunk?” Thanks for the thoughtful mention too, Bud! - Art.”
- March 22 column, “Safety Matters: Law enforcement in favor of expansion of DNA database:” “Only a person with no brains would vote for an unbridled expansion of this DNA database. Tearing at the heart strings of legislators by parading victims of horrific crimes is no way to arrive at good legislation which has respect for the ‘right to a private life’ of citizens without undue interference and snooping by government.”
- March 29 letter to the editor, “Teacher costs should be cut:” “Mr. Donner, I could not agree more with your views. We need to start paying our employees what they are worth. With the number of teachers looking for work, we should be paying about 40 percent of the current levels. Stephen Schunk, BOE member.”
- March 15 sports article, “Springville athlete signs letter of intent to play football in Massachusetts:” “Class act. Assumption got a deal with this kid!”
- April 5 article, “Potato chips from a tater tot: Springville-GI Board looks at living under budget restrictions:” “Novel idea: Get rid of ineffective and unnecessary administrators and you could put that monetary savings toward programs, teachers and aides. If that money isn’t enough to fund everything, at least it’s a start. It sounds like that is what the community wants, because it is supposed to be about the kids. Isn’t that the BOE’s and the superintendent’s job? To represent the community and the students?”
- March 29 editorial, “Is it really just a number?” “Jessie Owen’s editorial ... struck me as narrowly presented, even uninformed.... numerous statements are presented as facts, without citing sources and leaving out important context. Peter Sobota.”
- Feb. 9 article, “Getting to know your neighbor: Sit back, relax and enjoy the show at the Joylan Theater:” “Oh my! I felt like I was a teenager and back in Springville waiting for my ‘boyfriend’ to show up to take me on our first date! I am with him now after all these years! Sharon (in regard to her date with Ken in 1960).”
- April 13 article, “Springville man receives a sportsman lifetime achievement award March 3:” “Congratulations. So well-deserved to a life-long friend and neighbor. Thanks. Bud.”
- Jan. 5 editorial, “Are you crazy? Then go ahead and commit a crime:” “On the subject of other crimes such as drugs, DWIs, theft: I am starting to think that these guys make out better being a criminal than not because the fines are probably only a fraction of the money they make committing the crime. Things need to change. Good, hardworking people don’t get the breaks these people get!”
- April 12 article, “Cattaraugus County Hall of Fame inductee:” “Dick Ford: Congratulations on being inducted into the Cattaraugus County Hall of Fame. You deserve it and happiness to you always. Cousin Joan.”
- March 8 article, “How are the Springville-GI kids doing in AYP?:” “This article fails to answer the question posed in the headline. Have all subgroups at S-GI made AYP? I understand that the state requirements are unclear, however, other districts, many of them with far more students with special needs, manage to never come close to failing AYP. How did S-GI do?”
- Dec. 15 article, “Plans underway for the upcoming Concord Bicentennial:” “Sounds like the celebration planning is in full swing! So glad that this important milestone in Concord’s history is being acknowledged throughout the community; I only wish I lived closer so I could take in every event. D. Palmer, Ontario, Canada.”
- March 22 article, “Getting to know your neighbor: develop that green thumb with help from Jake’s Greenhouse:” “Thanks for this wonderful article. Hydroponics is slowly and surely gaining popularity among gardeners. I also have been growing vegetables hydroponically but not yet tried on such big scale. The success of Jake’s Greenhouse is like an inspiration for me to try it on a large scale.”
- April 5 article, “Local trap shooter selected for NYS All-State team:” “Can’t tell you enough how very proud we are of you, Nathan.”
