Cornell University Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener’s Gardening Day will be offering a free program on May 12 called “Vegetables - grow your own.”

The event will be hosted by Cattaraugus/Allegany county master gardeners. The gardening day will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 1:10 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 28 Parkside Drive, in Ellicottville. The program is free, but interested parties can pre-register by calling 534-5477 or 860-3936.

Master gardeners will be giving presentations for beginner and intermediate vegetable gardeners using demonstration gardens and hands-on activities.

Attendees may participate in three one-hour presentations. Offerings will include “Groundwork – the basics of soil,” “Garden Layout – demonstration gardens” and “What and How to Plant – planning seed and plant purchases.”

Attendees may also choose to attend one of five different mini-workshops from 12:40 - 1:10. These will include “Build a rain barrel,” “Vermi-composting (worm composting),” “Get children gardening,” “Start composting” and “Construct vertical gardening supports.”

A coffee break with snacks will be provided. There will be door prizes and giveaways, as well.
