S-GI students participate in music ensembles
The Junior High Area All-State Festival, which includes grades seven – nine, was held at Akron High School on Nov. 2 and 3. The Senior High Area All-State Festival, featuring grades 10 – 12, was held at the State University of New York at Fredonia Nov. 16 and 17. The students were selected as a result of their ratings at New York State School Music Association solo festivals held in May.
These honors ensembles included junior and senior high school musicians from the greater Western New York region.
Each festival consisted of a band, orchestra, string orchestra, mixed chorus and women’s chorus; each ensemble rehearsed with a music teacher and/or conductor and performed in a concert.
Students who participated in Area All-State from Springville Middle School included Sadie Kirkham in the string orchestra, Isobel Hooker in band and Erin Jurkowski in full orchestra.
Students who participated in Area All-State from Springville High School included Brittany Sullivan in band, Neha Flier in the string orchestra, Leah Ratterman in the string orchestra, Dan Rothman in band, Deborah Gil in the full orchestra, Nick Benstead in the mixed chorus, Lauren Manchester in band and Kingsley Kolek in mixed chorus.
Three students are also participating in the Southtowns Youth Orchestra, this year.The SYO is a youth orchestral ensemble that features student musicians from throughout the Western New York area. Acceptance is by audition only.
The youth orchestra rehearses in Orchard Park during the school year and performs two concerts, per year. The first concert of this year took place on Sunday, Nov. 18.
The students were accepted into the SYO as a result of their auditions, which took place this past June. Participating springville students are Erin Jurkowski, Neha Flier and Leah Ratterman.
