VanOver Fine Arts to exhibit Grant photography

BOIL, BOIL, TOIL AND TROUBLE — Pictured are two photographs from Grant’s “Final Thoughts – Eternal Beauty in Stone, on display through Nov. 3.
SPRINGVILLE — “Final Thoughts – Eternal Beauty in Stone,” by Photographer John Thomas Grant, will be on display at VanOver Fine Arts, 49 East Main St., Springville, starting on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Grant’s photographs will be presented with a preview from noon – 3 p.m., followed by the opening reception, from 6 – 10 p.m. Grant will release his new book of photography, “Final Thoughts,” at that event. The exhibit will close on Nov. 3.

Ten years ago, Grant was not a photographer nor a taphophile, someone with a passion for and enjoyment of cemeteries.

“My art evolved in a search for my family roots; it was genealogy that brought me to the cemetery,” said Grant, a resident of Boston, Mass.

Having worked in the music industry, Grant retired from that field in the mid-90s to focus on photography.

During the opening reception, an actor will portray the Victoriana Lady Lisa, a 19th century widow attired in authentic mourning clothing, consisting of widow’s weeds and mourning jewelry. She will share anecdotes about Victorian mourning etiquette, rituals, customs and attire.

This reception is part of the Downtown Springville Annual Fall Art Crawl, which begins Oct. 6.
