Middle school students meet an American hero

A SLICE OF HISTORY — Dianna Cummings, as Harriet Tubman, speaks to seventh graders at Springville Middle School.
Seventh graders at Springville Middle School studied abolitionist, humanitarian and Union spy Harriet Tubman. On May 30, Tubman re-enactor Dianna Cummings visited the school, dressed as the woman who helped many Americans flee slavery.

Cummings has been performing for about six years, formerly with Motherland Connextions of Niagara Falls, and conducts Underground Railroad tours in Buffalo. She has also portrayed Mary Talbert, Sojourner Truth, a slave girl and a slave boy.

The re-enactor spoke to the students about what it meant to be a slave in the 1800s, what Tubman’s early life was like, how the Underground Railroad operated and more. The talk concluded with a question-and-answer period.
