Springville-GI students enter employability competition

PROUD OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS — Cody Schweickert and Olivia Emerling display their certificates.
Two Springville-Griffith Institute High School students in Eric Holler’s college and career portfolio class entered the Business Education Employability Portfolio Scholarship Competition recently and one earned the top prize.

Cody Schweickert won $750 and Olivia Emerling met all of the entry requirements. They were among more than 30 participants from among Western New York Schools.

In addition to meeting citizenship, attendance, community service and academic requirements, entrants were judged on their portfolios, which included a professional profile (resume, cover letter and letters of recommendation), college preparation and workforce competencies such as problem-solving, interpersonal skills, gathering and managing data, integrated learning and technology and leadership.

Other sections included evaluations, career exploration, technological experience, awards, writing samples, volunteer work and video presentation.

“Students were required to interview with a panel of interviewers and their portfolios were their evaluation. They both did a great job,” Holler said.
