Dog Ears Cafe opens for business

SOUTH BUFFALO - With so many events occurring at Dog Ears Bookstore we almost forgot that they were in the midst of adding a café – but now that the café is open, we are wondering how we ever got along without it.

Located at 688 Abbott Road, the Dog Ears Café is now open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. In addition to a variety of coffees, and teas the café is now serving light fare that includes wraps, sandwiches, and light snack items for the health conscious.

The “make-your-own” sandwich bar allows you to satisfy your appetite in any way you wish, with your type of meats, cheeses, and veggies on any type of bread, grilled, cold or Panini style.

Brandon and Kathleen Casey from Orchard Park stopped in for a cup of hot spiced cider before a recent Mount Mercy basketball game.

They sat by the picture window overlooking Abbott Road.

“This is the perfect spot,” said Kathleen as she finished her cider, “It’s warm and inviting. We will certainly be back, and next time we will bring the grandchildren.”

The narrow store front may deceive you, but after stepping through the doorway and perusing the café items in the chicly decorated cafe, make your way into the bookstore to find one of the best collections of books by local authors that we have found, as well as great best sellers, classics, and children’s books.

If you time things well you may be fortunate enough to mix your café excursion with a book signing by one of our local authors or a Friday night poetry event.

Your children may enjoy the Thursday evening “Bedtime Stories” or Friday morning “Puppy Tales” that is held in the second floor area with walls adorned by paintings of characters that seem to have stepped right out of the pages of Dr. Seuss and other children’s classics.

With white lights glistening in the windows, and tastefully appointed seating and décor, the café area is warm, welcoming place, and the perfect spot to meet with friends, or just take a break from reality with a good book and cup of your favorite warm beverage.

“The café is a funding source for the bookstore,” states Tom McConnell, “The Dog Ears Bookstore and the Enlightment Literary Art Center provides a venue where writers and readers meet together for a unique literary experience. The profits from the café assist in continuing the bookstore’s efforts.”

With poetry classes, local author book signings and interviews, and various children’s events, the Dog Ears Café and the Dog Ears Bookstore and Enlightment Literary Art Center unite to create an inspirational, yet relaxing escape from the day to day activities transpiring just outside their door.
