Town to focus on conserving by storing rain water

In the efforts to conserve water usage and recycle, the Town of Tonawanda applied for a county funded grant, which will be used to design and construct two cisterns (barrels) that will capture and store rain water.

The town already has a few cisterns, which serve the same purpose, however, with the additional two - the town can further their efforts of conservation.

The board approved an inter municipal agreement between the town and Erie County for future use of the cisterns.

The suggestion to gain two more cisterns came from the Environmental Conservation Commission in the town. The stored rain water will be used for watering town plants, washing town vehicles and cleaning town streets.

“We were very fortunate to receive this grant,” said Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana. “We’re excited and looking forward to it.”

The two cisterns will be placed at the Highway Department and at the Senior Center.

In other town news:

• Sheridan and Brighton Golf Courses are now open. The driving range will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and the Paddock Golf Dome will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through May.
