SOUTH BUFFALO - As winterís cold unfolds through South Buffalo and the crispness of the holiday season falls upon us, take a break from the holiday hustle and bustle and picture yourself in the warmth of the Florida Everglades, in the midst of the fragrant rainforest or among the green cactus of the desert.

If it sounds inviting, then grab a camera and head to the Botanical Gardens of Buffalo.

One of the areaís most visited venues of our area for tourists, we often forget the beauty we have right in our own backyard.

Located at 2655 South Park Avenue, and hosting visitors from as far as Europe and Australia, the green winding pathways of the Botanical Gardens lends itself to a peaceful retreat in the midst of one of our coldest and busiest seasons.

A photography contest is presently being held at the Gardens, with all entries to be submitted by Dec. 31.

What a wonderful excuse for the amateur photographer to retreat to the beauty of the Gardens for a quiet afternoon of strolling, picture taking and plant exploration.

The categories to be judged are architecture, unexpected inspiration, and outrageous color. Prizes will be awarded to the top three photographs in each category.

The photograph must be taken at the Botanical Gardens, either inside or outside, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31.

The entry fee for the contest is $8 per photo for non-members. Members of the Botanical Gardens are allowed one free entry, and there is a $6 fee for each additional entry. Winners will receive a prize as well as a certificate, and awards will be posted in early 2013.

The Botanical Gardens is also featuring a poinsettia show and a Garden Railway exhibit now through Dec. 30.

The train exhibit will include a Thomas the Train exhibit and a traditional train display. The gift shop is presently selling poinsettias and other holiday flowers, with prices starting at $5.

Join the Gardens on Dec. 20 for their Fresh Holiday Arrangement Class, where participants can design a beautiful arrangement just in time for gift giving or holiday table decorating.

The fee for the class is $20.

Dollar Day is scheduled for Dec. 30, and the Botanical Gardens will be open to the public with $1 admission for this special event day sponsored by National Grid.

Regular admission to the Botanical Gardens is $7 for general admission and $9 for flower show dates, with discounted admission for children, students, and seniors.

Annual membership fee of $40 per person and $60 per family includes unlimited access to the gardens for all general admission dates and flower shows.

Visit the Botanical Gardens for additional contest rules and event information, either in person or on the web at www.buffalogardens.com, or call 827-1584.
