New program offers city residents rewards for recycling

For the past year, City of Lockport residents have had the opportunity to participate in the curbside recycle program through Modern Recycling, saving taxpayers more than $425,000 by disposing 43 percent less waste.

This program now has even more of an added benefit to city resident. Residents can participate in a rewards program, designed to “reward” those who recycle with various coupons.

“It’s win win for all parties,” said City Clerk Richelle Pasceri. “It’s a benefit to you and a great mechanism to get recycling numbers up.”

Each time a resident recycles, they can log onto their account and record their activity by clicking “I recycled today.”

Once active, residents can access saving certificates and coupons to local, regional and national businesses. There are also prize give-a-ways. Available coupons categories include clothing, restaurants, car servicing and entertainment businesses. The more times a resident recycles the better coupon options become available to them.

Also, each time the recycling routes collect a total volume of material that exceeds a recycling threshold, additional levels of savings will open up to residents on those routes.

To sign-up, visit www.modernrecyclingrewards.com and click activate account. Resident will be asked to enter their zip code and follow the set-up instructions for the free account.

Local businesses are also invited to offer savings coupons in the Modern Recycling Rewards program.

Acceptable items to be recycled in Lockport’s program include paperboard, office paper and junk mail, newspaper, phone books, magazines and catalogs, cardboard and pizza boxes, plastic jugs and bottles, plastic bags and rigid plastic items.

Aluminum cans, kitchen cookware, steel and tin cans and both colored and clear glass are also accepted.

Unacceptable items include garbage, Styrofoam containers and packing material, paint cans, flammable liquids, chemicals, wood items, garden hoses, yard waste and electrical cords.

The city also holds an electronic waste drop-off program at the South Street entrance of Harrison Place from 10 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturdays of the month.
