The Barge Canal Optimist Club of Lockport installed their 2012-2013 officers and board of directors on Oct. 1 at Willowbrook Golf Course and Restaurant. This was a fitting start to the Optimist year, which runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2013.

Serving as president of the club is charter member Audrey Jex. Additional officers are Julie Pevey and Clara Tilney, vice presidents, Joan Pickles, secretary/treasurer and Jane Rathke sergeant at arms. Board of Directors include Laurie Ferris, Lorraine Kibler, Rayann Livergood, Karen Lucas, Maggie Lupo, Diane McFarland, Carolyn Stutz and Anita Tice.

“I am looking forward to serving as the leader of such a dedicated group of individuals in the coming year,” Jex said. “I am proud of the work we do for the children and our community, and I hope to see our club strive in its efforts in the year ahead.”

Past co-presidents Ferris and Livergood also took this opportunity to thank all clubs members for their dedication and support throughout the 2011-2012 Optimist year allowing the Barge Canal Optimist club to serve the youth of Lockport.

Special recognition was given to Northpoint Council, Inc. for their continued partnering with the club and their efforts to education children regarding the dangers and challenges they face every day.

Accepting the award that evening were staff members Teresa Cansclale and Kellie Ines.

The Barge Canal Optimist Club has been serving the Lockport Community for 22 years. Youth service projects include Just Say No!, Girl Power, fifth grade basketball, bike safety, Internet safety, Project Backpack, Project Warm-A-Kid, senior awards and Yellow Dyno.

The first question that comes to mind for me is, the "mayor" and her husband are both in the fire department, both EMT's, so why instead of stopping the ambulance didn't they just take over if the driver wasn't qualified? It's real comforting knowing that if you call 911 in Farnham your ambulance might be delayed by a mayor on a power trip. Someone should remind her this isn't a dictatorship and put her in her place. Excellent representation of the village, but what do you expect from someone who won the position by default? Maybe next election they could at least get a chimp to run against her, I'm sure you can guess who they'll vote for this time.
