Enjoy the view from LumberJacks patio

NORTH TONAWANDA - With 30 years of experience in the restaurant business, Owner of the newly opened LumberJack’s Waterfront Patio Grill Carol Tallichet was more than excited to bring her expertise to her home town.
Specialty Restaurants Corp. is based out of Anaheim, CA. Carol’s late husband, David Tallichet, was the founder of Specialty Restaurants Corp. He started with one restaurant and reached 87 at one point, but the company recently reduced that number to 22 restaurants. Among the restaurants are Templeton Landing in Buffalo, and in the 1990s Specialty Restaurants Corp. also owned and operated the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant out of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
“We are privately owned, family owned,” said Carol. “We are more controllable with 22 restaurants. My husband was the innovator of themed restaurants. They had to be on the water, on a hill top, or on a run way.”
She continued, “I live five minutes down the street, I pass this place daily, I looked at it and thought - ‘What a sensational location.’”
When Carol mentioned the option of creating a waterfront restaurant destination at 1000 River Road, North Tonawanda, to the Specialty Restaurants Corp. Board of Directors, which she is a member of, the board voted that the location was too small.
So in turn, Carol elected to bring her vision to life all by herself.
Restoring the former Niagara River Yacht Club, which is part of the Marina Restoration Project has been underway for the past year. Falling just shy of $2 million, the project was federally funded with the assistance of Niagara River Greenway funds, city and private donations. City officials wanted to be able to allow LumberJack’s Waterfront Patio Grill to welcome patrons to enter into the city marina, dock their boats and sit down for a delicious dinner while they enjoy a waterfront view.
“It was vacant for six years,” said Ortt. When I took office this was a big promise that I made, but I certainly have to give credit to Dale Marshall and Brad Rowles for all the in-kind services that have been provided. Also to ATM, CRA, the council - there is a lot of credit to give around.”
According to Ortt, the first slip is done and ready for opening day, while the dredging is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. The city is currently waiting for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to sign the permit and get it into the correct hands.
“They are not expecting it to be a long dredging process,” said Ortt. “Dale is only expecting it to take a few weeks.”
Work on the second and third slip will most likely be pushed into next year, but both are able to be completed with the allotted funding that has already been made available for the project.
Once the dredging is completed and the transient docking is available to the community, the staff at LumberJack’s Waterfront Patio Grill will begin to manage the area and the city will receive 20 to 25 percent of profit brought in by the boats and 5 percent of the gross sales.
Lumberjack’s committed to a 20 to 25 year lease, however either party is able to opt out of the contract within five years if necessary.
As a North Tonawanda native Carol is proud and honored to be a part of the growth occurring in the City of North Tonawanda.
“I think this area is so dynamite that I congratulate the city for all they have done. The mayor of North Tonawanda has just done an exceptional job,” said Carol. “I am very excited. I am so proud and happy to see all of the improvements in the area. It’s aggressive and positive.”
She added, “It is very rewarding to be from here, to be part of this, and be from the community.”
At her side is right-hand-lady, Mary Lou Pieper, who has also played a crucial role in the development of the restaurant throughout the past year.
Pieper, a manager and friend to Carol, is overjoyed with how far the development has come over the past year and is excited to open the doors to the public.
The waterfront patio grill will offer a variety of menu items including Hamburgers made from 100 percent Angus beef, served on a Costanzo’s roll; Wardynski Hot Dog served on a freshly toasted roll; LaBatt Beer Battered fish served on a toasted bun; Lumberjack’s Handcut Seasoned Curly Q Fries; and much more.
Stop in for a milk shake and a fry to go, or pull up along side the dock and tie off for dinner.
LumberJack’s Waterfront Patio Grill will be open seven days per week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., beginning Friday, July 12, during which a soft opening will be held.
The restaurant accepts cash only, however an ATM is on site for those patrons who only carry plastic.
