The City of Lockport Police Department is now offering a New York State Department of Conservation approved receptacle for the safe and proper disposal of unused, unwanted and expired prescription medication.
The receptacle is located in the complaint room at the City of Lockport Police Department, One Locks Plaza and is accessible by the public 24-hours a day.
There is no documentation required for a citizen to dispose of any prescription medications.
According to the police department, improper disposal of unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications has become a public health issue in the community.
When not properly disposed of, prescription medication can fall into the wrong hands and lead to substance abuse, illegal resale and accidental poisonings.
Improperly disposed of medications are also an environmental hazard as they contaminate the waterways and drinking water when flushed down a toilet or thrown in the trash.
The police department is encouraging any citizen with unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications to utilize the receptacle in an effort to combat the abuse of prescription medication in this community and to prevent any further environmental damage from pharmaceutical pollution.
Contact the Lockport City Police Department at 439-6633 for more information.
