The Erie Canal Discovery Center is sponsoring the seventh annual Erie Canal Art Contest to celebrate the 187th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.
This senior high poster contest is open to students residing in Niagara County and enrolled in high school grades ninth through 12th.
Younger students are encouraged to take part in an Erie Canal Coloring Contest with three age categories: kindergarten through second, third through fifth and sixth through eighth.
Contest entries for all age levels are available now at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St., Lockport or online at www.NiagaraHistory.org.
All entries should be returned to the Discovery Center no later than 4 p.m. on Oct. 13.
An awards ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 at the Discovery Center. This is a free public event to recognize the accomplishments of these talented young artists and to celebrate the 187th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal.
Cash awards will be presented for the top three high school entries and prize packets will be given to three winners in each age bracket for the younger students. All contest entries will be on display at the Discovery Center.
In addition to the art contest awards ceremony, the Discovery Center will be hosting a Krolick’s chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with dine-in or take-out service available. Pre-sale tickets are available now at the Discovery Center for $9.50, including dessert.
Dinners will also be on sale at the event for $10. A free music concert has also been scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. entitled, “Relativity.” This performance will feature several different musical sets with each ensemble being composed of family members.
