Just the stats ma’am, just the stats

Students in the Orleans/Niagara BOCES Security and Law Enforcement Program at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center recently got a lesson in statistics, probability and observation. Cal Rhoney’s class spent time with math teacher Julie Roloff and science teacher Darlene Mariani, who put together a video and handout so that students could understand how statistics are used to allocate staffing and justify budget requests in real world application.

“It was a fun and creative way for students to use critical thinking in use of statistics,” said Rhoney. “They used M&M’s and the computer graphing capabilities and a calculator to demonstrate the practical application of statistics and probability in police work. The message was don’t believe everything you read, do your own research.”
