Lancaster man killed in roadway accident

LANCASTER- The Lancaster Police are currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 11:03 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19.
According to police, a pickup truck was traveling west on Broadway in the town when the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the street north against five lanes of traffic in the area of Grambo Drive. The pedestrian was apparently on his way home after coming from the gas station across the street.
“It was a bad combination of factors,” said Lancaster Police Lt. Aaron Meyers, commenting that the pedestrian, Richard Stevens, 72, of Lancaster, was not crossing in a pedestrian walkway or under a street light. He was wearing dark clothing and because he was an elderly man he was probably walking slowly.
The driver of the truck, Jeffrey Szafraniec, 24, of Buffalo, was visibly shaken at the scene, but was not injured. Szafraniec has been cooperating with investigators and no charges have been filed at this time.
Stevens was unconscious and unresponsive at the scene and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation is continuing and investigators are awaiting the results of the autopsy and toxicology tests, which takes a couple of weeks.
Police said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
The crash is being investigated by the Lancaster Police Accident Investigation Unit.
