Local youth to perform in 'Great Russian Nutcracker'
But this year, a group of young local dancers will have their dreams come to life.
The Moscow Ballet will again be performing their “Great Russian Nutcracker” at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 9 on the Historic Palace Theatre stage, 2 East Ave., Lockport.
The ballet tells the classic holiday story of a girl who falls in love with the Nutcracker prince. This is their 20th anniversary of the production.
This year’s show will feature a new “Dove of Peace” performed by two dancers, a Christmas tree that grows to seven stories tall, 40 top Russian dancers, falling snow, silk puppets, 200 costumes and more.
This is the second year the ballet has been danced in Lockport.
Last year was the first time the ballet had been performed in the Niagara County area of Western New York.
As part of the performance a group of more than 30 young dancers were selected to be apart of the ballet.
In September, a Russian prima ballerina from the company came to Lockport and held auditions. Young dancers from all around Western New York were selected to perform in the ballet.
“It’s a great variety,” said Palace Executive Director Chris Parada. “There are kids from different studios from around the area.
Those selected were taught a part by the prima ballerina.
They then have been continuing to rehearse their parts at home and at Dyan Mulvey Dance Academy in Lockport.
Parada said they would not, however, perform with the Moscow Ballet until dress rehearsal the day of the performance.
Parts local youth will perform in include the Russian variation, Spanish variation, French variation or as children, mice, snowflakes or angels.
Ticket for the Moscow Ballet’s performance of the “Nutcracker” start at $28.
