Clarence pianist to perform at Carnegie Hall

Jarod Yap, 13, of Clarence has been awarded the Tri-State Certificate of Excellence for grade 10 piano and also for grade seven violin.
This award is given annually by the Carnegie Hall/Royal Conservatory of Music and is given to the student in the Northeastern United States who has obtained the highest marks in each grade’s examination and has completed all necessary piano, theory and music history requirements for that grade level.
As the prize winner, Yap will perform at the Tri-State Certificate of Excellence Recital and Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall.
Yap has studied piano with Mary Handley for the past seven years and has been a frequent gold medalist and scholarship winner in music festivals and has won the 2011 Empire State Junior High Piano Competition, Piano Teachers Forum Summer Study Scholarship, BRAVO concerto competition popularity award and was the 2012 NYSSMA Concertmaster. He also studies violin with Andrea Cone.
Yap hopes to complete his final piano examination for the ARCT degree this year, he already completed all of the harmony, music history, counterpoint and analysis requirements for the degree.
He is a member of Greater Buffalo Youth String Orchestra, Clarence Middle School Orchestra, has been on the winning team for the 2012 Battle of the Books and been on the winning Clarence Soccer Team for the past two years.
He also enjoys Chamber Music, accompanying, soccer, swimming, drawing, reading and has a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Yap is in eighth grade at Clarence Middle School and is the son of Dr. Johnny and Christina Yap of Clarence.
Yap hopes to pursue a career in music or medicine.
