Baby lamb named Oreo

It’s official; the baby lamb born to the Lakeview Animal Sanctuary has a name.

At the July 28, Lockport Community Market, the announcement was made, naming the lamb Oreo.

The name was the result of a contest where over the past few months the community has been invited to submit ideas and vote on what they want to name the lamb, who was born on Easter, April 8.

Contest organizer Jay Krull said there was “overwhelming” support for the name Oreo. He said there were more votes for Oreo than total for the other four names the community could vote for.

In June, five judges selected five possible names from a list submitted by the community. Judges were City of Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker, state Sen. George Maziarz, Niagara County Legislator Tony Nemi, Niagara County Legislator Keith McNall and Pendleton Supervisor Jim Riester.

The other names were Butter (as in Easter Butter Lamb), Baa-boo, Pendleton and Petey from Pendleton.

Oreo was submitted by Diane Hoffman and selected by judge McNall.

A free petting zoo, featuring the baby lamb and other animals at the Lakeview Animal Sanctuary will be at the remaining Lockport Community Market’s held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug. 25.

The Lakeview Animal Sanctuary is a non profit organization that provides homes for unwanted, injured, abused or abandoned animals.

Sanctuary Director Sandy Pfohl said it is important to let the public know what the sanctuary does because they are solely funded through donations.

She said they do the most rescues of exotic, farm and wildlife animals in the area. Her list of animals include alpaca, llamas, rabbits, dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, goats and Thomas B. Butterball the turkey.

“We need the public support to keep going,” Pfohl said.

The Sanctuary is open to the public to visit. Located at 5180 Fiegle Road in Pendleton, those interested in visiting must call first to make an appointment.

The Lakeview Animal Sanctuary also does petting zoos for birthday parties and other special events, letting the public interact with the animals.
