BOCES holds international workshp

The Orleans/Niagara BOCES Center for School Improvement and Professional Development (CSIPD) recently co-sponsored an event with the William Glasser Institute.
Sue Tomaszewski, who is in charge of the CSIPD says the workshop was on Choice Theory/Reality Therapy /Lead Management certification.
“This was a great event and drew educators from not only this area, but Canada,” she said. “In order for people to achieve certification they must have been through prerequisite courses of Basic Intensive Week, Basic Practicum, Advanced Intensive Weekend and Advanced Practicum courses. About 104 hours to prepare them for this certification.”
Choice Theory is an internal motivation system providing greater understanding of why human beings make the choices/decisions they make and how to use this knowledge to create learning environments that are need satisfying and without reliance on external rewards or what might be considered “coercion.”
Choice Theory uses a different approach based on the understanding of human behavior across age levels.
“People who have completed certification have generally devoted at least two years, sometimes more, and participation in certification has participants demonstrating their skills in counseling and lead management during role plays, and also through a presentation indicating their understanding and application of Choice Theory in their personal and professional lives,” said Tomaszewski.
Thirteen people were in attendance, five from the Toronto area, two from Pennsylvania, one from New Jersey, one from Michigan and four from the Newfane Central School and Lockport Central Schools and one person from the private sector who works with Lewiston Porter School District.
“I am especially proud of Lockport Superintendent Michelle Bradley,” says Tomaszewski. “She has taken this opportunity to now help her district’s staff to create an environment where everyone embraces internal motivation practices for the improvement of teaching and learning. As the Practicum Supervisor at both the Basic and Advanced levels for the four people completing certification from our area, I look forward to continuing with a number of others from our component districts who will be readying for a certification week next year.”
