Eden Highway Department to work with fewer resources in 2013

BY: Steven Brachmann | January 17, 2013

The Town of Eden’s Highway Department will have to make do with fewer resources this year, a fact that Ron Maggs, Eden’s Superintendent of Highways, says will result in some restrictions in service.

The Eden Town Board approved the highway department’s spending agreement at a board meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The agreement authorizes the town’s highway department to spend the $395,000 raised from taxes and state aid on general repairs to 48.98 total miles of town roads. These funds will cover repairs to drainage, patching and sealing of roads and other repairs as needed.

Maggs noted that this year’s spending agreement reflected a four percent decrease in highway funding. These budget constraints would likely hamper the town’s ability to keep up with certain repairs, like paving projects. “I’ve never seen a year where the price for oil and gas went down,” Maggs said. “This is what I mean by ‘remitted repairs.’”

In other business, the board:

• Appointed the town’s representative for the New York State Association of Towns meeting in mid-February. Town Judge Michael Cooper will represent Eden as a voting member of the Albany conference, which takes place between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20. Mark Agle, chairman of the planning board, has appointed his alternate.

• Noted the open registration period for town youth recreation leagues. Registration for town recreation baseball leagues will start on January 19 and end on Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Eden Little Loop Football registration will occur on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All registrations will happen at the Eden Town Hall.
