Robin Schimminger was re-elected by voters for his 19th term in the state assembly representing the 140th district.
“Even greater than the exhilaration of an election victory is the affirmation and support from people for the job that I have been doing. They say keep it up and I will,” said Schimminger.
His opponent, Charles Gilbert, a Tonawanda High School graduate who now works as an electrician, focused his campaign on pay cuts for state senators and assemblymen as well as job growth for small businesses. He spent 2009 to 2011 representing the First Ward in the City of Tonawanda before he lost in a close election.
“Obviously thousands of people gave him their support and I wish him well in the future,” said Schimminger of Gilbert.
In Erie County Schimminger had 70 percent of the vote while Gilbert, received 30 percent of the votes and results were similar in Niagara County with Schimminger receiving 66 percent and Gilbert receiving 33 percent.
One of Schimminger’s top priorities will be job growth in the city. He wants to improve the job climate in New York State and make it a more hospitable place to do business.
“I think people are figuring out now that folks can’t find the kind of jobs they like here, because the job creation climate is more hospitable in other locations and that’s why companies leave and jobs grow elsewhere. Our mission is before us and it will be my top priority,” said Schimminger.
Schimminger was in good spirits on Tuesday surrounded by friends, some of which he’s known since high school, and family.
He was thankful for the support he has been given by those close to him as well as citizens over the years.
“I certainly want to thank all the people that helped out in the campaign and I certainly want to thank every voter for participating in the election process,” said Schimminger. “And a special thank you to those who felt that I was the right choice to serve as the assemblyman here and I will not let them or anyone down.”
