NORTH TONAWANDA - North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt has been preparing to present his annual budget to the common council. Currently, he is waiting to receive the specific requests from department heads and is expected to receive those no later than Sept. 4. He plans to present his tentative budget to the council by Oct. 1 for their review.
The budget will be voted on at a later date during a public meeting.
In other city news:
• Ortt received a request from the family of Vietnam Veteran Dennis McDonald to place a flat granite bench at the point where the Erie Canal meets the Niagara River on Tonawanda Island, in order to preserve his memory in the city.
“Dennis had a lot of friends in North Tonawanda and he spent a lot of time down at Tonawanda Island,” said Ortt. “For the family, that area is more of a personal nature.”
Alderwoman Nancy Donovan showed support for the memorial as she stated, “It’s great how popular this is becoming. People in our city wanting to do something to give the veterans recognition,” she said.
Ortt added, “We [the city] have done good job with the Hometown Hero banners and the home on Sherwood. I think with the treatment the Vietnam Vets received when they got back, the families are now seeing that this may be an opportunity for people to right those wrongs.”
Costs and maintenance will be taken care of the family and they are ultimately only seeking the permission of the city to do so.
• Council plans to review partnership with Opportunities Unlimited, regarding shared green house space at Botanical Gardens.
• Road and sidewalk work is being completed in the city in a timely manner.
• A common council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 216 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda.
The budget will be voted on at a later date during a public meeting.
