The Town of Collins has set Monday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. as the time for the dedication of its new 30-foot flagpole in the Collins Town Park in recognition of war hero James Hackemer. American Legion and VFW officials are expected to be present for the affair.
Collins Center Zoar Road, between School Street and East Becker Road, will be closed for the replacement of a box culvert from Oct. 17 to Nov. 21. No detour will be posted.
Town Supervisor David Tessmer reported that all surplus items from the Collins Center water project that were taken to auction were sold. Total recovery for the town was $6,133.50. Tessmer also stated that he has been working with UNYTS for Collins to sponsor blood drives on a regular basis at the L.K. Painter Center in the Community Room. The first date has been scheduled for Monday, Dec. 10. Further info regarding times, etc. will be forthcoming.
Councilman Ken Martin reported on an awareness walk he took through the more remote areas of the Collins Town Park. He stated that the area is criss-crossed with ATV trails, which are forbidden in the park. There has been a bit of refuse disposal in places not to mention the occasional beer cans, and campfire locations. He also stated that the actual boundaries of the property are difficult to identify.
The board discussed bids on renewing the roof on the salt barn, which is considered a must for this fall, but decided they needed more information on specifics before awarding the work.
In other matters, the board:
• Set priorities and authorized the Supervisor to sign a contract with ECCBDG for the Community Developments Block Grants be: 1) Exterior rehabilitation of the L.K. Painter Center, complete with the installation of an emergency generator; 2) Collins Town Park playground equipment; 3) Rural Transit Van Program, upon approval by ECCDBG.
• Hired the following persons for the winter recreation program: Returning at $9.80 per hour, Head Counselor Travis Gominiak, Head Cashier Samantha D’Amaro and Craft Coordinator Tina Marrocco. Counselors returning at $9.30 per hour are: Christian Francis, Jessica Mercado, Rebecca McMullen, Tom McMullen, Christian Peglowski, Rebecca Russell. New Counselors at $8.75 per hour are: Maria Girome and Robert Stark.
• Accepted the supervisor’s report for September 2012.
The next trash day will be Saturday, Oct 27. The next meeting of the Collins Town Board will be a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 22, to complete budget preparations.
