Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce to host job fair

With today’s economy it is extremely difficult to find a job, especially when most companies request online resumes. A local chamber knows how inconvenient this transition can be which is why they are putting employers and potential employees all in one room.

“The employers can put a face to a name because a lot of them do online applications now and it can be very easy for your application to get lost in cyber space so to be able to talk to an employee face to face and get that amount of time right away is a great opportunity,” said Debra Liegl, President and CEO of the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce.

The Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 11th annual job fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 8 at the Walden Galleria. The goal of the event is to find qualified candidates for several local businesses in the area needing to fill positions. It also helps jobseekers get interviews immediately with dozens of reputable companies.

“It started with the conversation we had when Assemblyman Gabryszak was still town supervisor. We had a meeting with him and a number of businesses in town and one of the businesses said that it was hard for them to find qualified employees so we thought we could set that kind of niche for them by pulling employees and employers together,” said Liegl.

Liegl said it is important for jobseekers to dress appropriately and have several resumes at hand to distribute to the employers. She encourages people to talk to everyone at the booths so that they can see what job opportunities are available to them from the various companies. The chamber will also have a table set up for jobseekers to check in and then organizers will direct them towards the employers.

Available positions include cashier, food service, assistant store manager, manufacturing/production, machinists, administrative assistant, inside sales, outside sales, data entry, tractor trailer trainees and instructors, independent living advisor, security officer/driver, HR/staff training assistant, registered nurses/critical care, nurse practitioners, home care RNs, school bus drivers, personal care aid, home health aide, licensed practical nurse, production/manufacturing, clerical/customer service, maintenance mechanic, CNC machinist, manufacturing support/maintenance, machine operators, collection representatives and member service representative/credit union tellers.

The job fair is being held in the lower level of the Galleria Mall next to the Apple Store.

“There are literally hundreds of people at the job fair looking for other employment opportunities. The walkers in the mall even call their son, daughter or grandson and let them know that this is going on,” said Leigl.
